Paper Plate Sunshine Smiles

A simple, happy craft that works especially well for younger grandkids.

Why this one works
This craft is forgiving, inexpensive, and easy to adapt for different ages. There is no “wrong” way to do it, which keeps things light and fun.

What you’ll need

  • Paper plates
  • Yellow paint or crayons/markers
  • Construction paper (yellow, orange, or whatever is on hand)
  • Glue stick
  • Safety scissors
  • Optional: googly eyes, yarn, stickers

How to make it

  1. Color the plate – Let the kids paint or color the paper plate yellow. If paint is used, set it aside to dry.
  2. Make the sun rays – Cut triangles or strips from construction paper. Older kids can help; younger ones can tear paper, which works just as well.
  3. Glue the rays – Turn the plate over and glue the paper rays around the edge.
  4. Add a face – Draw on a smiling face or glue on eyes and yarn for hair.
  5. Personalize – Add names, dates, or stickers if you like.

Grandma tip
While hands are busy, ask gentle questions like:
“What makes you happy?” or “What do you like doing together?”
You’ll often get the sweetest answers when they’re focused on creating.

This craft usually takes about 15–20 minutes and leaves you with something cheerful to hang on the fridge—or the window—long after the glue dries.
