Cheerful Milk Jug Bird Feeder (A Simple Recycled Craft for Grandkids)

birdfeeder

This is a wonderful, gentle craft that turns an everyday empty milk jug into something useful and joyful. It’s perfect for little hands, easy to clean up, and extra fun because you can watch birds enjoy it afterward.

Materials (All Easy to Find)

  • 1 empty plastic milk jug (rinsed and dry)
  • Child-safe scissors
  • String, yarn, or twine
  • Birdseed
  • Markers, stickers, or washable paint (optional for decorating)
  • A pencil or marker (for you to mark cutting spots)

Step-by-Step Directions (Grandma-Friendly!)

  1. Prepare the jug
Make sure the milk jug is clean and dry. Leave the cap on for now.
  2. Mark the windows
Using a marker, draw two large squares or arches on opposite sides of the jug, about 2–3 inches up from the bottom.
Grandma tip: This keeps the birdseed from spilling out.
  3. Cut the openings
Carefully cut out the marked shapes.
⚠️ Important: This step is best done by you. Little ones can watch or help hold the jug steady.
  4. Decorate the feeder
Let the grandchildren decorate the outside with markers, stickers, or paint.
Pacing tip: Keep decorations on the outside only and let paint dry fully before adding seed.
  5. Add the hanging string
Poke two small holes near the top of the jug (you may need scissors or a pencil). Thread string through and tie a knot to make a hanger.
  6. Fill with birdseed
Remove the cap and pour birdseed into the bottom of the jug. Screw the cap back on tightly.
  7. Hang it up
Hang the feeder on a tree branch, porch hook, or fence where you can easily see it from a window.

Supervision & Safety Notes

  • Scissors and hole-poking should always be done by an adult.
  • Wash little hands after handling birdseed.
  • Remind children not to touch birds that visit—watching is the fun part!
