Here’s a simple, joyful snow-day craft that uses what you already have and gets everyone outside for a bit ❄️
Materials
• Clean, fresh snow
• Food coloring or washable liquid paint
• Empty squeeze bottles, spray bottles, or sturdy cups
• A spoon
• Old baking tray, cardboard, or just a flat patch of snow
• Mittens and warm clothes
Directions (Grandma-Friendly Steps)
1. Fill containers with snow.
Let the children scoop clean snow into bottles or cups. This is a great job for little hands.
2. Add color.
Put 2–3 drops of food coloring or a small squirt of washable paint into each container.
3. Mix gently.
Use a spoon or gently shake the bottle until the snow turns colorful and slushy.
4. Create the artwork.
Take the colored snow outside and squeeze, pour, or spoon it onto:
• A baking tray
• Cardboard
• Or directly onto untouched snow in the yard
5. Admire the designs.
Encourage swirls, dots, lines, and “snow rainbows.” There’s no wrong way to do this.
6. Let nature clean up.
When you’re done, simply leave it—melting snow does the cleanup for you.
Supervision & Practical Tips
• Help with squeezing bottles, especially for younger children whose hands may get tired.
• Remind them not to taste the snow, even though it’s colorful.
• Dress warmly—this activity is best done in short bursts so fingers don’t get too cold.
• Use washable colors only in case some splashes land on mittens or boots.
• If it’s very cold, prepare the snow indoors first and carry it outside together.
