What You’ll Need
(Grandma sets these out first)
- 2 slices of soft sandwich bread
- 1–2 slices of cheese (American, mild cheddar, or anything melty)
- Soft butter (about 1 tablespoon)
Optional, if the kids are curious:
- A thin tomato slice
- A sprinkle of shredded cheese
How We Make It (Together)
- Butter the Bread
Let the child use a butter knife to spread butter on one side of each slice.
It doesn’t have to be perfect. Grandma says, “The bumps make it homemade.” - Build the Sandwich
Place one slice of bread butter-side down.
Let the child lay the cheese on top. If it hangs over the edge, that’s just extra crispy flavor later. - Grandma Handles the Heat
Grandma puts the sandwich in a pan over medium-low heat.
While it cooks, this is a good time for a short story, a song, or counting slowly to thirty together. - The Flip (Big Moment!)
Grandma flips the sandwich.
The child can watch the cheese start to melt and say when it “looks ready.” - Cool, Cut, and Share
After cooking, let it cool a minute.
Grandma cuts it into triangles—because triangles always taste better.
Grandma’s Notes
- If the bread gets a little dark, that’s okay.
- If the cheese oozes out, that’s a success.
- The sandwich is just an excuse—the real recipe is patience.
