Makes: about 24 cookies
Time: 10 minutes prep · 10–12 minutes baking
Ingredients
- ½ cup (1 stick) butter, softened
- ½ cup white sugar
- ½ cup brown sugar
- 1 egg
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
- ½ teaspoon baking soda
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- 1 cup chocolate chips
What the Kids Can Do
- Pour ingredients into the bowl
- Stir with a spoon
- Scoop dough onto the tray
- Count cookies
- Taste one chocolate chip (or two… quietly)
Instructions
- Warm Up the Oven
Set the oven to 350°F (175°C).
Line a baking sheet with parchment paper (or lightly grease it). - Mix the Sugars and Butter
In a large bowl, mix the butter, white sugar, and brown sugar until soft and creamy.
(It does not need to be perfect.) - Add the Egg and Vanilla
Crack in the egg and add vanilla.
Stir until everything looks smooth. - Add the Dry Ingredients
Sprinkle in the flour, baking soda, and salt.
Stir gently until it turns into dough. - Add Chocolate Chips
Pour in the chocolate chips and mix just enough to spread them around. - Make Cookie Scoops
Scoop small balls of dough (about 1 tablespoon each) and place them on the baking sheet.
Leave a little space between each cookie. - Bake
Bake for 10–12 minutes, until the edges are lightly golden.
The centers will still look soft—that is perfect. - Cool (If You Can Wait)
Let cookies cool for a few minutes before eating.
They will firm up as they cool.
Grandma Tip
If the kids lose interest halfway through, that is normal. Finish scooping the dough yourself and call it teamwork.
